Open education is currently an intensively debated topic. While the focus of many educational institutions was in the past on making learning resources available under open licenses in the form of open educational resources (OER), nowadays several good practices are available that go beyond self-learning and the sole focus on resources. With the increase of the availability of (massive) open online courses new opportunities for knowledge building and skill acquisition are available. Recent studies already show the impact of course participation on study success and career development.

This series of lectures and expert discussions starts of with a ganeral introduction into the current debate on open education and the state-of-the art of research at the moment. Several challenges for open educational practices are introduced from the perspective of onging research projects. A special session is dedicated to the instructional design of massive open online courses and the specific challenges introduced by large numbers of participants. Together with the National Unesco Commission of the Netherlands one day will be dedicated to international policy making about open education and the relation to the sustainable development goals formulated by UNESCO. Last but not least strategic and organisational challenges of educational institutions will be introduced by experts. Each day a one-hour live session will be offered during noon (12 – 13) accompagnied by scientific and professional publications related to each topic. Participants will be able to ask question that will be treated during the live sessions.

This lecture series on open education will offers a comprehensive and accessible format to get an overview of recent developments and to assess the possible approaches for educational institutions to develop their own open education strategies.
